Before you go

Parks Victoria states that dogs are welcome on lead at You Yangs Regional Park and specifically that you can bring your dog on the Flinders Peak walk provided it is on a lead. Owners are asked to pick up all waste and carry it out. No dog exclusion zones are listed for the park.

On lead at all times, everywhere in the park. There is no off-lead area in the You Yangs.

When: Any time Parks Victoria lists park hours of 7am to 5pm outside daylight saving and 7am to 6pm during daylight saving

The walk: moderate, 3.3 km return, about 1 hour 15 minutes, rated grade 3, including 450 steps and roughly 200 metres of climbing

Worth knowing before you arrive

450 steps, which is hard on older dogs and on paws in hot weather
Exposed granite and a windy, shadeless summit, so carry water for your dog
Snakes are active in the warmer months in this dry grassy country, so keep your dog on the track
Fox control using 1080 baits is used in parts of Victoria, so read the notices at the park entrance before you go and never let your dog scavenge
Park gates close in the evening, so time your return to avoid being locked in

About Flinders Peak Walk, You Yangs Regional Park

The You Yangs are granite ridges rising abruptly out of the Werribee Plain between Geelong and Melbourne, and Flinders Peak is the high point at 343 metres. The walk leaves the Turntable car park and works up through boulders and sparse bush to a steel viewing platform, taking in a lookout over the Bunjil geoglyph on the way. Views run out over Port Phillip, Geelong and, on a clear day, the Melbourne skyline. Crucially for dog owners this is a regional park rather than a national park, so leads are allowed where a national park would turn you away.

Which dogs it suits

Genuinely dog friendly, easy to reach and a real summit reward, which is rare so close to Melbourne. It is marked down because it is on lead only, hot and exposed in summer, and the steps rule it out for small, old or short nosed dogs.

Getting around
