Before you go
Dogs are welcome on the Esplanade on a lead. They are not permitted in the Lagoon or the parklands immediately surrounding it, and must stay more than two metres from playgrounds and barbecues. There is a dedicated off-leash area at Coconut Grove at the far northern end of the Esplanade, and owners must keep the dog under effective control there. Council advertises on the spot fines of $834 for breaches.
On lead for the length of the boardwalk, with one exception: the signed off-leash area at Coconut Grove at the northern end. Cairns off-leash areas are signed, and council's position is that if there is no sign, the lead stays on. A dog that will not recall on command must stay leashed even inside the off-leash area.

- Easy. Flat, sealed and pram friendly the whole way, roughly 1.5 km one way between the Lagoon precinct and Coconut Grove, about 30 minutes each way at a relaxed pace.
Worth knowing before you arrive
- Estuarine crocodiles use Trinity Inlet and the adjacent mudflats. Keep dogs on the boardwalk and off the mud and out of the water.
- Marine stingers, including box jellyfish, are present in far north Queensland waters from roughly October to May. This is not a swimming beach for dogs in any season.
- Dogs are banned outright from the Lagoon and its surrounding parklands, and council advertises $834 on the spot fines.
- Keep at least two metres from playgrounds and barbecue areas.
- Tropical heat and hot pavement. The boardwalk surface bakes in the middle of the day, so walk early or after dark.
About Cairns Esplanade Boardwalk
The Esplanade boardwalk runs along the Cairns waterfront above the Trinity Inlet mudflats, and Cairns Regional Council explicitly welcomes dogs along it. The catch is that the rules tighten as you move south: dogs are barred from the Lagoon and the parklands around it, and must stay at least two metres clear of playgrounds and barbecues anywhere along the strip. Walk north instead and the crowds thin out, the fig trees give real shade, and you finish at Coconut Grove, a broad open parkland at the far northern end that is a designated off-leash area. The whole route is flat, sealed and pram friendly, so it suits elderly dogs and short legs as much as it suits a morning jog. The mudflats beside you are working estuary rather than swimming beach, which is the main thing to keep your dog away from.Which dogs it suits
