Visitors report that dogs are commonly brought here and walked on lead. A dog travel guide names Donnellys Castle as one of the best outcrops around Stanthorpe that can be explored with a dog and states plainly that there are no signs relevant to dogs on site, while advising a lead because of the drop offs. A bushwalking community site tags the walk as dogs permitted, and a local accommodation blog lists it among dog friendly outings with the same advice about steep drops. Nothing from a land manager confirms or denies any of this, so treat it as a reported community practice rather than a stated rule.

The community accounts that mention a lead do so because of the unfenced edges on top of the boulders and around the cave mouths, not because of any posted requirement. Southern Downs Regional Council lists no off lead area anywhere near Pozieres, so a lead is the sensible assumption. Expect to do the flat section and the picnic area together and to take turns at the top, because the gaps between the rocks defeat most dogs on a lead.

About Donnellys Castle

Donnellys Castle is a cluster of enormous granite boulders on a low rise near Pozieres, riddled with passageways and overhangs and tied up with a bushranger story about the caves. Two very short walks leave the picnic area, one of roughly 55 metres into the cave area and another of about 100 metres up to a lookout perched on top of a boulder, and most people count the whole wander at around 800 metres return. The reserve is kept up with picnic tables and barbecues, and the last stretch of road in along Castle Lane is unsealed. It reads like a miniature Girraween, with the important difference that this is crown recreation reserve rather than national park, so a dog is not automatically ruled out.

What we could not confirm

No land manager page addresses dogs here, and we could not find any council page about the reserve at all. Donnellys Castle does not appear on the Southern Downs Regional Council Stanthorpe parks list, nor on its regional parks list, and the council's dog off leash areas page does not mention it in any way. The regional tourism attraction page describes the site as a crown recreation reserve maintained with picnic tables and barbecues and makes no mention of dogs or pets; the Queensland tourism listing returned no pet information either. A dog travel guide states directly that there are no signs relevant to dogs at the site, which is the closest thing to a signage check we have. What we could not confirm: who the reserve trustee is (secondary reports say the local Lions Club maintains it and that the land was donated by the Zanatta family), whether any on site sign deals with dogs, and whether any dog restriction has ever been applied to the reserve.
