Walkers report that dogs are commonly taken around the summit loop on lead. A dog travel guide describes the summit trail as unsignposted and says dogs on a leash are permitted to join you, a bushwalking community site tags the loop as dogs permitted, and two pet directories list it as a dog walk with dogs to be kept leashed at all times. No land manager or venue statement about dogs at Mt Marlay could be found, so this is what people who go there report rather than a published permission.

Every community account we found describes dogs on lead, and none reports an off lead area on the hill. The council publishes only two off lead areas for the whole region, at Victoria Park in Warwick and the fenced enclosure on Connor Street in Stanthorpe, so a lead is the sensible default here. The path passes close to unfenced granite edges in a couple of places, which is another reason to keep hold of the lead.

About Mt Marlay Summit Loop

Mt Marlay rises straight out of the back of Stanthorpe and carries a lookout platform with a wide sweep over the town and the granite country beyond. A narrow concrete path loops right around the top under the trees, which takes most people about fifteen minutes at a dog's pace, and there is a steeper stair track up from Alice Street if you would rather earn the view. Picnic tables sit near the summit car park, some of them shaded, and free mounted binoculars point out over the valley. Separate mountain bike tracks drop off the same hill, so stay on the walking path and keep your dog close at the junctions.

A genuinely pleasant short walk with a big view for very little effort and easy parking, marked down because the dog evidence is community level only, there is no water on the hill and the loop itself offers little shelter in the heat.

How to Do: Mount Marlay Lookout and Summit Walk (Southern Downs & Granite Belt) Regional tourism guide confirming the walking start on Alice Street, the drive in from the end of Lock Street, a 500 metre return distance on concrete stairs and path, and summit facilities of binoculars and picnic tables. It makes no mention of dogs or pets anywhere.

What we could not confirm

No land manager page states a dog rule for Mt Marlay either way. The Southern Downs Regional Council Stanthorpe parks page at sdrc.qld.gov.au/our-region/parks-open-spaces/stanthorpe-parks does list Mt Marlay Lookout among the town's parks, but the entry carries no facilities or conduct detail and the page says nothing about dogs at any individual park. The council's dog off leash areas page names only Victoria Park in Warwick and the Connor Street enclosure in Stanthorpe and does not mention Mt Marlay at all, so it neither permits nor prohibits dogs there. The regional tourism write up of the summit walk covers the trailhead, distance, surface and facilities and never mentions dogs, and a local tourism directory lists the lookout as Pet Friendly - Enquire, which is a prompt to ring and ask rather than a statement of policy. What we could not confirm: whether council policy permits dogs on this specific reserve, whether any sign at the car park or on the loop deals with dogs, and whether the mountain bike tracks on the same hill are closed to walkers with dogs.
