The rules, in short

Before you go

Noosa Shire Council lists Noosa Heads Noosa Spit among the shire's designated off-leash dog areas and publishes a map of its boundaries. Council rules require dogs to be leashed in all public areas except designated off-leash areas, and owners must supervise their dogs even inside those areas. The off-leash zone is the beach on the river side of Claude Batten Drive and does not include the car park. Dogs are not permitted in bathing reserves anywhere in Noosa Shire, which covers the patrolled surf beaches.

Off lead on the river side beach of the spit, excluding the car park. On lead everywhere else in Noosa Heads, and no dogs at all in the shire's bathing reserves including Noosa Main Beach.

Worth knowing before you arrive

  • Tidal flow through the river mouth can be surprisingly strong on a running tide
  • Constant boat, kayak and jet ski traffic on the river channel
  • Paralysis ticks are present in coastal Queensland scrub, so check your dog after a run
  • Hot sand from mid morning through summer
  • Noosa Main Beach and the national park headland immediately east are closed to dogs, so know where the boundary is

About Noosa Spit Off-Leash Dog Beach

Noosa Spit is the sandy tongue of land where the Noosa River finally meets the sea, and the river side of it is one of the few places in Noosa where a dog can legally run free. The water on the river side is sheltered and shallow at low tide, so it reads more like a lagoon than a beach, and a lot of local dogs learn to swim here. Behind the sand there is shade under the trees of the recreation reserve and a flat area for a throw. It is a short walk from Hastings Street, but Noosa Main Beach next door is firmly closed to dogs.

Which dogs it suits

Small Medium Large Giant

Sheltered water, legal off-lead running and a five minute drive from the middle of Noosa make this outstanding for a holiday with a dog. Half a point comes off for the river traffic and for how tightly it is hemmed in by dog free beaches on either side.

Getting around

Parking runs along Claude Batten Drive close to the water, so the walk from car to sand is short and flat, though the sand itself is soft.
