Before you go

City of Hobart lists Nutgrove Beach as a restricted dog exercise area. Dogs may be off lead from 6pm to 10am during daylight saving and from 3pm to 10am for the rest of the year, and must be on lead between those times. The western entrance next to Lipscombe Avenue and the access on the eastern side of Nutgrove Park are on lead at all times. Owners must clean up after their dog.

About Nutgrove Beach

Nutgrove is the northern half of the long sandy arc at Lower Sandy Bay, separated from Long Beach by a basalt seawall built in the 1970s. It is a calm, north facing stretch of about 700 metres, backed by the lawns of Nutgrove Park and looking across the River Derwent to kunanyi and the eastern shore. The City of Hobart treats it as a restricted exercise area, which in practice means a long off-lead window early and late in the day and a lead in the middle. Dogs that like swimming get flat, shallow water here rather than surf.

A rare thing in a capital city, a long sandy beach with flat water, grass behind it and a real off-lead window at both ends of the day. It loses half a point because the middle of the day is on lead and two access points are on lead permanently, which catches visitors out.

Getting around

Sealed paths and lawn through Nutgrove Park give reasonable pram and wheelchair access to the foreshore, although the sand itself is not firm.
