Before you go

Between Day Use Area 2 and Day Use Area 3 dogs may be exercised off lead at any time of year, provided they stay under effective control. West of Day Use Area 2, dogs are banned entirely between 10am and 6pm from 1 December to 1 March; outside that window and outside those dates the western section is also off lead under effective control. Leads are required on the Clarence Coastal Trail and other shared paths behind the dunes.

Council defines effective control as keeping your dog close, in sight and immediately responsive to command. The off-lead entitlement does not extend to the shared coastal trail, where leads are mandatory.

When: Any time Accessible at all times. The only time based restriction is the summer daytime ban on the section west of Day Use Area 2.

Rips occur, particularly when the swell is over a metre
Aircraft pass low overhead on approach to Hobart Airport, which unsettles noise sensitive dogs
Shorebirds use the dunes and upper beach, so keep dogs off the soft sand above the tide line
Leads are required as soon as you step onto the coastal trail behind the beach

About Seven Mile Beach Dog Exercise Area

Seven Mile Beach runs for about ten kilometres along the eastern shore of Frederick Henry Bay, a twenty minute drive from Hobart and right beside the airport. The stretch between Day Use Area 2 and Day Use Area 3 is declared off lead by the City of Clarence all year, which gives you a couple of kilometres of firm sand with nobody else in sight on a weekday. Access is off Surf Road, and each day use area has its own car park, so you can start at one and walk to the other rather than doubling back. Surf is usually modest here, though rips form once the swell picks up, and the water is cold enough that most dogs are happier wading than swimming. West of Day Use Area 2, towards the shop and the Esplanade, a summer ban applies in the middle of the day, so that end is the one to avoid in January.

The numbered day use areas make the rules legible on the ground. Held back from a five only by the aircraft noise and the need to know which section you are on.

Getting around

Sealed road access via Surf Road off Pittwater Road, with car parks at each numbered day use area. Additional access points near the Seven Mile Beach shop, at Lewis Park and off Grueber Avenue. Getting onto the sand involves crossing soft dune ground.
