Newcastle, NSW 2300
Newcastle's dedicated dog beach, tucked inside the harbour with calm water and no leash required.
The Guide's rating
The rules, in short
Before you go
City of Newcastle lists Horseshoe Beach as an approved leash free area, and the NSW Government promotes it as Newcastle's dog friendly beach. Dogs must be accompanied, supervised and controllable without a lead, owners must remove all faeces, and dogs are not permitted within 10 metres of a playground. Dogs declared dangerous or of a restricted breed are not allowed in leash free areas.
Listed by City of Newcastle without a time restriction, unlike several other Newcastle reserves that are leash free only around dawn and dusk. The council's general rule for leash free areas is sunrise to sunset, so early night walks are safest done on lead.

Worth knowing before you arrive
- This is a working harbour, so expect wash from tugs and freighters
- Tidal current runs strongly near the harbour entrance
- Unpatrolled, with no surf lifesaving service
- Hot sand in summer, as there is very little shade on the beach itself
- Broken shell and rock at the edges of the bay
About Horseshoe Beach
Horseshoe Beach sits on the harbour side of the Nobbys breakwater, a short walk from Nobbys Lighthouse, and is the one Newcastle beach set aside for dogs. Because it faces into the harbour rather than the ocean, the water is flat and shallow, which suits dogs that are still learning to swim. Dunes and scrub wrap around the back of the sand, so there is no road for a dog to bolt onto. Coal ships and tugs slide past the entrance, which is half the entertainment.Which dogs it suits
